I featured this supplement about a year ago when doing a series on detoxification support for the body.
I want to now look at how ALA helps in Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), in combination with inositol and metformin (prescribed medication).
Of particular relevance to women with PCOS, ALA has been shown to greatly increase insulin sensitivity. It has been proven to greatly increase the rate of glucose transportation from the blood into the cells where it can provide energy to the muscles and brain versus being turning into fatty acids and stored in the fat cells (making them bigger – Oh, no! ).
Fact: Inositol is also known as B8.
One study with PCOS subjects showed that the addition of inositol and alpha lipoic acid to metformin achieved better results in lowering weight, HOMA (homeostatic model assessment for quantifying insulin resistance), and testosterone than a higher dose of metformin alone. * Those taking the combination almost doubled their % decrease in BMI.
